Cartier at Last Month's Art Basel Miami Beach

Cartier approached renowned Italian architect Alessandro Mendini to create an object d'art using fine and precious gems that can no longer be used in classical jewelry as the stones have been pierced, dismounted, and engraved.

Mendini took the gems and created a precious column of pearls, emeralds, sapphires, mandarin garnets, moonstones, diamonds, chalcedonies and rubies and constructed a column almost eight feet high. The piece incorporates 50 pounds of 18 kt pink gold and more than 17,000 carats of gems.

Ann Dexter-Jones Debuts Jewelry Line at Art Basel, according to HauteLiving.

British born New York City socialite, Ann Dexter-Jones is hitting Miami’s Art Basel for more reasons than just checking out the incredible and vast amounts of art. Dexter-Jones will be debuting her line of jewelry during the world-famous Art Basel Miami Beach.

Well-known in part due to her famous children, Samantha, Mark, and Charlotte Ronson, as well as rocker husband Mick Jones, Ann Dexter-Jones has been building her own empire for years now. The multi-talented and always on the run mother of five is trying her luck in the jewelry designing business. So far, it seems to be catching on like most things Dexter-Jones sets her mind to.  Her new line of rock-inspired trendy jewelry will be debuting this weekend in Miami at The Webster during Art Basel.

Dexter-Jones’ received some fantastic pre-debut press when it was reported that model Kate Moss fell immediately in love with one of the pieces of jewelry (which Dexter-Jones happened to be wearing at a wedding they all attended in London) and wanted to have it. The British model actually purchased the bracelet right off of Dexter-Jones’ arm right there and then, before donating her own Chanel bracelet to the bare-armed designer.

The need for aid in Haiti is clear and Honora wants to help. 

With this in mind they have created a pearl necklace from the colors of Haiti’s flag and will donate 100% of the proceeds to the ongoing efforts.

Vicenza sees attendance rise nearly 37 percent

January 25, 2010 Vicenza, Italy--The 62nd annual Vicenzaoro First jewelry fair, the first major show of 2010, closed Thursday with show organizers saying attendance was up 36.6 percent over the 2009 show.

Attendees numbered 17,969 at the end of the sixth and final day of the show, compared to 13,154 in 2009, a press release issued Friday said.

According to the release, the countries best represented at the show were France, Germany, Greece, Spain, Israel, Turkey and the United States.

Walking the show's aisles were a number of high-profile luxury buyers from around the world, including Scott Martin of U.S.-based Saks Fifth Avenue.

Show organizers suggest that the increase in attendance may be attributable to an increase in demand for gold and jewelry among consumers, but the release adds that it is too early to say without hard data from other sources.

The positive news comes as the jewelry sector continues to recover from the recession. According to the release, the demand for Italy's gold and jewelry fell about 18 percent in 2009, including a very marked downturn in the United States (where demand fell 17 percent), as well as declines in the Middle East and Europe.

As a college teacher — he’s the assistant director of the writing program at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University — he works with young people and feels pressure to keep current. He uses an electronic blackboard system to post his syllabus, class assignments and grades online, but he doesn’t trust it. “There are glitches,” he said. “The school’s system has crashed a few times. They want us to use it, but I back everything up on paper.”

While we're all for the digital revolution, I thought I'd share a cautionary tale. We seem to be exchanging ease for common sense. But at least we still have the choice to put our common sense back into play.

Jewelry Scene on Celebs at the 2010 Golden Globes

Those damn asymetrical strap dresses are killing the necklace this year!

Otherwise, it's been a good (but not great) jewelry red carpet. My hands down favorites are Courtney Cox's topaz earrings, Drew Barrymore's Lorraine Schwartz moonstone ring the size of the moon, Kate Hudson's pearl and diamond tassel earrings and Felicity Huffman's diamond drops (barely seen but I adored!). And let's not forget Julia Robert's huge (and trend setting) Van Cleef & Arpels necklace  (thanks to JustJared.com for the quick info).

 

Julianne Moore rocked 115 carat emerald earrings, and thanks to the eagle eye of The Jewelry Insider on her blog, http://jewelry01.blogspot.com, we assume these are the same Bulgari earrings she wore in their latest campaign.
