Lisa Jenks is coming back! And she’s doing it at
globalDESIGN.
After two decades at the top of the designer heap, Lisa Jenks suspended her jewelry work three years ago to focus on home accessories. Now she is returning full force at
globalDESIGN. this February in Philadelphia where she will debut a new signature sterling silver collection. Retailers will once again get the chance to be part of the Lisa Jenks magic!
Other highlights of the 10th anniversary edition of the show include the debut of several designers to the crafts market and the return of sought-after designers who have made globalDESIGN. an important destination for retailers. Taken together, they form an international roster of talent in an exhibition that runs concurrently with the
Buyer’s Market of American Craft, the largest wholesale market of American-made craftsmen. globalDESIGN’s proximity to the Buyer’s Market makes it easy for gallery owners to shop both shows, a feature that designer jewelry expert
Cindy Edelstein planned when she invented
globalDESIGN.
“We are so happy to make these kinds of collections available during the craft market,” commented Cindy Edelstein, “and we’re happy to be next door to the Buyer’s Market.”
She explained that globalDESIGN shows for just three days over the weekend, and opens early and stays open late to help the buyers fit in all their shopping. “Our ambiance,” she continued. “is intimate yet friendly and offers retailers the chance to review new lines over a continental breakfast or afternoon cocktails.” And, she added, to help gallery owners prosper in these difficult economic times, “we offer merchandising advice and jewelry industry insights as well.”
GlobalDESIGN will be held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, just down the hall from the Buyer’s Market of American Craft show. Dates are February 12 – 14, 2010. The show, which in style and organization is more akin to a trunk show than a trade show, is purposely limited to 18 carefully chosen designers. Retailers report that this size, coupled with the carefully selected range of jewelry styles, makes for a comfortable, convenient and manageable buying experience. For their added convenience globalDESIGN offers buyers a light breakfast in the morning and wine in the afternoon.
MORE NEW DESIGNERS: In addition to Lisa Jenks, these designers will be making their craft show debut at globalDESIGN this year:
Chris Ploof, a budding star in the handmade jewelry world who has built a reputation through his technical excellence and design acumen. Chris works with a number of metals, including 14k and 18k gold, platinum, Mokume Gane, Meteorite and Damascus Steel for a wide range of bridal and fashion designs.
German Kabirski is one of the youngest and most enigmatic Russian jewelry brands. In 2000, the previously unknown designer took first place at Moscow’s international jewelry show. He has since garnered a lot of attention for his avant garde designs and use of a wide range of unusual materials.
Anthony Lent is an internationally recognized master jeweler, has taught at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology for thirty-one years and has won international awards for his jewelry. Buyers of his work tend to become avid collectors of it.
Victor Velyan has been making jewelry for more than twenty years, originally working for others as a stone setter and then as a custom jeweler. Then two years ago he created a wholesale line of his own and won an AGTA Spectrum.
Erica Molinari has been known for her delicate gold and silver designs that offer accessible jewels for the fashion conscious clientele. She’s got a wide range and has had much success with her diamond-studded pearls, blackened silver bangles and twiggy hoops.
Ray Griffiths, an Australian-born jeweler who has been creating beautiful jewelry for 30 years, got his start by fabricating the intricate substructure for tiaras and crowns. That taught him the importance of technical excellence, a trait that only adds to the enduring appeal of his exuberant pieces.
Ann Cahoon has been studying all the fine jewelry arts for a while now and her own collection marries many techniques with her signature touch of simplicity and grace.
Elements & Alloys is the design partnership of Karen and James Moustafellos, a couple who met while studying architecture at Princeton University. They have successfully translated their architectural aesthetic into jewelry that showcases symmetry, balance and an appeal to women who appreciate clean, sleek lines.
Kristin Hanson is a contemporary fine jewelry artist whose work hand fabricated pieces lean heavily the texture, form and movements of nature.
Symmetry is designed Mary Margoni and Yannis Mandilakis in Thessaloniki, Greece. What makes the line so special, and unique, are the gloriously rough hand-cut gems that evoke the beauty of the Greek sea and sky.
MANY RETURNING DESIGNERS:Returning to globalDESIGN again this year (much to the delight of show regulars):
Gurhan. The master goldsmith, known primarily for his pure 24k gold designs, added pure white and dark silver to his collection last year to offer retailers a broader price range for his work. He has even more this year.
Alex Sepkus continues to innovate while retaining his instantly recognizable style. New pieces feature unique one-of-a-kind stones and patterns. There are bound to be even more this year. Bridal is the word for Sepkus 2010.
Pamela Froman has garnered a big following with her signature look called Crushed. It’s a hand-hammered texture she applies to white, yellow, green and pink gold in a beautiful mélange favored by many in the public eye. This year she will be offering more gem options.
Sugarman Frantz Designs is a collaboration of husband and wife jewelry designers Michael Sugarman and Christie Frantz who produce collections noted for beauty and fun. The large gemstone one-of-a-kinds they offer are mostly the work of Christie, and the coolly simplistic diamond Dot designs are readily recognizable as Michael Sugarman’s signature work.
Aaron Henry Designs by designer Aaron Furlong prides itself on uncompromising quality in the creation of classic beauty, a combination that never goes out of style as evidenced by the parade of retailers who make a pilgrimage each year without fail to their busy showcase in globalDESIGN.
Stephanie Albertson manages to marry style that never fades from fashion with another key element that appeals to women – fun! She uses bright, colorful stones to light up 18k gold rings, earrings and bangles – and the countenances of those who wear them.
